Rising 1944 in Colour – photo album

What colour was Warsaw in the summer of 1944, what did its soldiers and residents look like? How can archival photographs be colorized without using AI, but instead drawing on the knowledge of historians? And how can history be made engaging for young audiences?

Historians from the Warsaw Rising Museum and the ORKA post-production studio decided to answer this question by colorizing 100 photos from Polish Capital in August and September 1944, selected by acclaimed photojournalist Chris Niedenthal. The result is presented in this book. The photographs are accompanied by insurgent anecdotes, stories and witness accounts.

“(…) skilful colouring also has a scientific value: when we look at a black and white version of a photographic image, many details escape us. It is only with colour photographs that the finest nuances become visible.

(…) we hope that the colourful images from bygone times will open their eyes to the events of the past.
